What is Final-Mile Delivery?

When moving good and services to customers, final-mile delivery refers to the final stretch, often to the customer’s front door, after leaving a distribution center. Final-mile delivery -- also referred to as ‘last-mile delivery’ --  is seen as an increasingly challenging part of logistics due to increases in urban traffic combined with customers’ expectations of immediate delivery of their purchases.

Final-mile delivery issues aren’t limited to residential deliveries. Fleets that distribute to urban retailers have direct-to-store deliveries (DSDs) face final-mile issues, as do those delivering office products, auto parts, medical products, uniforms, and others.
