Making the Last Mile More Sustainable

The last-mile delivery industry is at the intersection of a major contradiction. Businesses and consumers have a seemingly infinite appetite for convenience and are driving demand for and near-instantaneous deliveries. This requires more vehicles driving more miles — from consumer meal, grocery or e-commerce deliveries to business-to-business restocking orders.

At the same time, there’s also a growing focus on sustainability and mitigating the effects of climate change. The challenge is how to reconcile these two conflicting pressures, which is what our customers are wrestling with.

Day in, day out, we see numerous initiatives across the industry with a focus on making tangible progress. We have customers with aggressive targets for Net Zero operations and the work they’re doing to meet those goals is impressive. These last-mile fleets are looking to smaller vehicles, bicycles, or even drones for deliveries, while the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is increasing, as well.

Last-mile Dispatch and Route Optimization Key Pillar in Supply-Chain Sustainability

Wise Systems is committed to working with our customers to support their sustainability efforts, with a particular focus on what we do best — using our last-mile dispatch and routing platform to drive efficiencies. One of the most tangible things we do for our customers is to help them reduce fleet miles; every mile saved reduces their carbon footprint. In addition to reducing miles and carbon footprint, we also increase fleet utilization, which takes vehicles off the road for some fleets.

What’s key to understand is that, beyond vehicles, technology like artificial intelligence (AI) can have a significant impact on sustainability goals. By optimizing the systems that decide where and when vehicles go, and in what sequences, there are enormous opportunities for an impact on sustainability. (See our video to learn more.)

Sustainability in the last mile is a priority for our customers, making it a priority for us, as well. We’ll be back with more insights on the topic, starting with the results from a recent survey we conducted. The feedback was fascinating and we look forward to sharing the results with you.
